Understanding Keratoconus and Keratoconus Lenses.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This irregular shape distorts vision, causing blurred or distorted images, increased sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at night. Keratoconus often starts in the late teens or early twenties and can progress over several years.

Symptoms of Keratoconus

  • Blurred or distorted vision

  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription

  • Difficulty seeing clearly at night

  • Eye strain or headaches

Early detection is essential, as keratoconus can worsen over time and may require special corrective measures.

Keratoconus Lenses

Standard eyeglasses often cannot correct the irregular corneal shape caused by keratoconus. This is where keratoconus lenses come in. These are specialized contact lenses designed to fit the unique shape of the keratoconic cornea and improve vision significantly.

Types of Keratoconus Lenses

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses:

o   Hard lenses that provide a smooth optical surface over the irregular cornea.

o   Excellent for moderate keratoconus.

Scleral Lenses:

o   Larger lenses that rest on the white part of the eye (sclera) rather than the cornea.

o   Vault over the irregular cornea, providing comfort and excellent vision.

o   Often recommended for advanced keratoconus.

Hybrid Lenses:

o   Combine a hard central lens for vision correction with a soft outer skirt for comfort.

o   Suitable for patients who cannot tolerate RGP lenses.

Custom Soft Lenses:

o   Designed for mild keratoconus.

o   Offer better comfort but may not fully correct vision in more advanced cases.

Lily's Tip:

Keratoconus is a condition that can significantly affect vision, but with the right lenses, many people can achieve clear and comfortable vision. Early diagnosis and regular follow-ups with an eye care professional are crucial. Modern keratoconus lenses, especially scleral and hybrid designs, have transformed vision correction for patients, allowing them to maintain an active lifestyle without compromising visual quality.
