Why UV Protection Matters for your eyes.

We often protect our skin from the sun, but what about our eyes? Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage delicate eye structures and increase the risk of serious eye conditions.

Even on cloudy days, UV radiation can still affect your vision.

How UV Rays Affect the Eyes

There are two main types of UV rays that reach the eye: UVA and UVB. Over time, excessive exposure can contribute to:

  • Cataract

  • Photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye)

  • Age-related macular degeneration

  • Growths on the eye surface (such as pterygium)

Short-term exposure can cause light sensitivity, redness, watering, and a gritty sensation.

How to Protect Your Eyes from UV Damage

Simple daily habits can reduce risk:

  • Wear sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays

  • Choose wraparound styles for better coverage

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat in strong sunlight

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours

  • Use UV-protective contact lenses if recommended

UV protection is especially important near water, sand, and snow, where sunlight reflects and intensifies exposure.

Lily's Tip

Protecting your eyes from the sun is a small step that makes a big difference. Quality UV-blocking sunglasses and regular eye exams help maintain long-term eye health and reduce the risk of preventable damage.
